Welcome to Porvoon Pikkukehräämö site!
In early days you could find spinning wheels in every household. The sound of spinning wheel was a usual sound in Finnish homes until 1940´s. To spin yarn from natural fibres that you could get from your local hoods – wool, flax and netlles – was important. It was the only way to get clothes.
In Finland, it´s very cold in the winter. We appreciate woolen pants knitted of native breed of sheep ram´s wool, or at least we did. Nowadays it´s easier to trust the synthetic fibres. But is it the only way? In Pikkukehräämö, we trust local wool and sheep farmers and want to use wool in a sustainable way, for sustainable clothing.

In the shop you can soon find handspun twoply yarn ( It´s called Pikkukehräämön Valkoinen and it´s coming soon to webshop ) and local wool for spinning and felting. There´s two different fiber mixes for spinning. The first one is a mix of Finnish Lapphund and finnsheep. The other one is a mix of Åland Sheep and finnsheep.
In the shop you can also take a look at a modern spinning wheel “Minstrel” that is for rent. The rent includes guidance on hand spinning so that you can get started.
The wool is gathered from Eastern Uusimaa coastline sheep farmers round little cities Porvoo and Loviisa. The raw wool is washed gently in lukewarm water using ecological detergent to behold the natural lanolin. Wool is handcarded in drum carder for two or three times. The finnsheep raw wool comes from Pellinki Island. The carbon footprint of Pikkukehräämö yarns and wool is minimal compared to wool products that are made overseas and transported several times.
You can find Porvoon Pikkukehräämö products in the webshop, but also in a yarn boutique in Porvoo city. In Kaivokatu 29, Porvoo, there´s a little yarn shop Porvoon Pieni Lankakauppa where you can take a look at Pikkukehräämö wool products. In this enchanting boutique you´ll find all the beautiful ethically produced yarns and can also buy a good cup of freshly ground coffee.
You can find Pikkukehräämö fibers for spinning also in Teeteeshop store in Porvoo.
